Echo Cancellation on iPhone, iPad and Android

This page covers the mobile apps — iPhone, iPad, and Android. The setting lives in the same place and behaves the same way on all three. For what it does and when to change it, see the Echo Cancellation overview.

On mobile, Echo Cancellation is on by default. Whisperr engages your device's built-in voice-call audio processing for the length of the recording, so the spoken translation coming out of the loudspeaker isn't picked up by the mic, transcribed, and translated again in a loop.

How to Change Echo Cancellation

  1. Open the Whisperr app — iPhone/iPad or Android
  2. Open ⚙ Settings
  3. Scroll to Transcription Settings
  4. Toggle Echo Cancellation on or off

The description under the toggle reads: "Filters this device's own speaker audio out of the microphone. Turn off to transcribe and translate audio playing from this device. Applies when the next recording starts."

  1. Go back and tap the record button — the new setting takes effect from this recording onward
note

The setting is read when a recording starts. If you flip it while recording, the session in progress keeps the mode it started with — stop and start again to apply the change.

When to Turn It Off

Turn Echo Cancellation off when the audio you want translated is coming out of the phone or tablet itself — a video in another app, a podcast, or a call on speaker. With it off, Whisperr applies no echo suppression of its own, so the mic hears the device's own playback and transcribes it like any other sound in the room.

Turn it back on for face-to-face conversation, and any time you use Speech Mode on a loudspeaker.

Common Issues

The same sentence keeps getting translated over and over

The spoken translation is looping back into the mic. Turn Echo Cancellation on, connect headphones or AirPods, or lower the device volume.

Whisperr isn't picking up the video I'm playing

That's Echo Cancellation working as designed — it filters out exactly that audio. Turn it off, then start a new recording.

The spoken translation sounds quiet with Echo Cancellation on (iPhone/iPad)

Voice processing ducks other audio, including Whisperr's own speech. Raise the volume, or use headphones for a cleaner mix.

It's on, but I still hear an echo (Android)

Not every Android device exposes a hardware echo canceller. If your handset can't engage one, use headphones — that breaks the loop regardless of the setting.
