Watch Anime Without Subs or Fansubs

Is there no subtitle track in your language, or are you still waiting on a release? Whisperr translates the Japanese audio live as you watch.

  1. 1

Open an anime episode in a new tab

    Leave it paused for now.

  2. 2

    Pick your languages

Set the language being spoken and the one you want to read. Tab capture is already selected.

  3. 3

Press Record, then pick that tab

Choose the tab in the picker, tick Share tab audio and press play. The translation appears here as people speak.

  4. 4

Pop the subtitles out over the video

Opens the subtitles in a small window that stays on top, so you can watch in the other tab and still read along.

When the tab picker opens, tick Share tab audio. Without it there is no sound to translate.

On Mac or Windows, you can also choose System audio in the Whisperr desktop app. It hears anything your computer plays.

Translate anime on your phone

Use the Whisperr app on iPhone or Android, on the same phone as the video.

  1. 1

    Turn on Floating Subtitles

In the Whisperr app, pick the language being spoken and the one you want to read, select Floating Subtitles, then press Record (Start on Android).

  2. 2

    Play anime

Switch to the app you watch on and press play. Captions float over the video where the app allows its audio to be captured.

  3. 3

    No captions? Use the microphone

Play the video on speaker, choose the microphone in Whisperr and turn Echo Cancellation off in Settings. Whisperr then hears the sound from your phone’s speaker. A quiet room gives better results.

Translate anime in your web browser

Use any streaming site and the Whisperr Web App, with nothing to install.

  1. 1

Play the video in a Chrome tab

Open the streaming site you use in Chrome and start your episode.

  2. 2

Open the Whisperr Web App in another tab

Go to whisperr.co/app in the same browser and choose your languages.

  3. 3

    Capture the video’s tab

Press Record, choose Screen Capture, pick the video’s tab and tick Share tab audio. It must be a tab, not a window or your whole screen.

  4. 4

    Keep the translation on top

Click Floating subtitles and the translation stays above the video. If the captured tab stays silent, use System audio in the Whisperr desktop app instead.

Translate anime on your computer

Use any app or browser beside the Whisperr desktop app on your Mac or Windows computer.

  1. 1

Play the video on your computer

Play the episode in any app or browser.

  2. 2

Open the Whisperr desktop app and choose System audio

System audio lets Whisperr hear whatever your Mac or Windows computer is playing, with no room noise. Then pick the language being spoken and the one you want to read.

  3. 3

Press Record and read over the video

Turn on Floating Subtitles and the translation stays on top of the video. If an app in exclusive full screen covers it on Windows, switch that app to windowed or borderless.

It's so effective that even in scenarios where other tools might fail, Whisperr performs perfectly. Additionally, the ability to select languages for translation directly on a phone is fantastic. Top-Notch Speech Recognition and Flashcard-Style Translations for Fast Study

“Whisperr's speech recognition and translation quality are both top-notch, and better than similar tools I've tried so far. Beyond that, as a Japanese learner, I especially like how Whisperr displays each sentence and its translation almost like flashcards, with a text-to-speech button for each one. That setup makes studying feel fast and efficient, and it's easy to review sentence by sentence.”

Anime translation FAQ

Is it as good as a fansub?+
No. It is a live machine translation, so it will not match a careful human translation of jokes, wordplay or character voices. It lets you follow the story when there is nothing else.
Which services does it work with?+
On a computer, System audio hears anything your Mac or Windows computer plays. In Chrome, it captures the tab. On a phone, Floating Subtitles work where the app allows its audio to be captured, and the microphone covers the rest.
Does it read on-screen text or signs?+
No. Whisperr translates what is spoken in the audio. It does not read on-screen text, and songs or loud effects can lower accuracy.
Is it free?+
You can try it free, but the free plan limits session length, so it will not cover a full episode or match. Paid plans are a flat fee with unlimited use and no per-minute or per-language metering.
