Translate a Signal call on your phone

Use the Whisperr app on iPhone or Android, on the same phone as your call.

  1. 1

Start your Signal call on speaker

Open the conversation in Signal and tap the phone icon or the camera icon. Then turn on the speaker. No phone app can capture a call on the same phone, so Whisperr listens through the microphone.

  2. 2

    Turn Echo Cancellation off

In Whisperr, open Settings and find it under Transcription Settings. With it off, Whisperr can hear the voice coming from your phone’s speaker.

  3. 3

    Press Record and read

Choose your two languages, press Record and read the translation as the other person talks. A quiet room gives better results.

Translate a Signal call on your computer

Run Signal Desktop and the Whisperr desktop app side by side on your Mac or Windows computer.

  1. 1

Start the call in Signal on your computer

Signal Desktop needs Signal on your phone first. Link it once, then call from your computer as usual.

  2. 2

Open the Whisperr desktop app and choose System audio

System audio lets Whisperr hear the call directly from your Mac or Windows computer. Then pick the language being spoken and the one you want to read.

  3. 3

Press Record and read in real time

The other person’s words appear translated on your screen. Choose Mic + System audio to include your own voice.

Top-Notch Speech Recognition and Flashcard-Style Translations for Fast Study

“Whisperr's speech recognition and translation quality are both top-notch, and better than similar tools I've tried so far. Beyond that, as a Japanese learner, I especially like how Whisperr displays each sentence and its translation almost like flashcards, with a text-to-speech button for each one. That setup makes studying feel fast and efficient, and it's easy to review sentence by sentence.”

Signal call translation FAQ

Does this keep my call private?+
Signal protects the call between your devices. To translate it, Whisperr has to hear the audio, and that audio goes outside Signal’s protection to be transcribed and translated. Ask the other person first, and do not use it on a call that must stay only inside Signal.
Is there a way to do this in my browser?+
Browser capture needs the call to play in a Chrome or Edge tab, and Signal offers phone and desktop apps for calls. Use your phone, or the Whisperr desktop app with Signal Desktop.
Does the desktop app work with Signal Desktop?+
Yes. The Whisperr desktop app captures System audio on Mac and Windows, so it hears whatever Signal Desktop plays.
Does the other person need Whisperr?+
No. Only you need it, and they stay in Signal as usual.
Is it free?+
You can try it free, but the free plan limits session length, so it will not cover a long call. Paid plans are a flat fee with unlimited use and no per-minute or per-language metering.
Can I use it for medical or legal Signal calls?+
Whisperr is not a certified interpreter. For legal, medical or safety-critical conversations, use a qualified human interpreter.
