Grandparents & grandkids
When Grandma and the Grandkids Don’t Share a Language
- 1
Set both languages
Grandpa’s language on one side, the kids’ on the other: Tagalog and English, Polish and English, Hindi and English. Check the arrow shows ⇄.
- 2
Phone in the middle, one at a time
Press Record. Let one person finish before the next starts; with kids, that is the hard part, and it matters.
- 3
Turn on Speech Mode for the little ones
Kids who cannot read yet, and grandparents who find small text hard, can hear the translation instead. Keep Echo Cancellation on, or use headphones.
Talk in person
Hold the phone between you: the grandparents speak their language and the grandchildren speak theirs, and each reads the other’s translation as it happens (or hears it, with Speech Mode).

Talk online
Open the Whisperr web or desktop app beside the video call and read what the grandparents say in your language as they say it, so the weekly call keeps its natural pace.

How to enable two way real time translation
Setup takes under a minute on any device.
- 1
Set both languages
Pick the language each person speaks, one in each slot.
- 2
Make sure the arrow shows ⇄
Tap the arrow between the languages until it shows ⇄ (two-way).
- 3
Press Record and talk
Each person speaks their own language and Whisperr translates both ways.

Where it helps
Small moments that used to need a translator
How to set each one up, with the catch.
The weekly video call with grandma
Speaker on, Whisperr on the same phone with Echo Cancellation off, and the kids read the subtitles. Or join from a laptop and capture the call, so the phone screen stays free for the video.
Translate a WhatsApp callSummer at grandpa’s house
Keep the phone on the kitchen table for the everyday questions: are you hungry, where are your shoes, tell me about school. Short sentences translate best.
Recording family stories
Ask grandma how she met grandpa and let her tell it in her own language. The kids follow the translation now, and you keep the transcript.
Bedtime and songs
Honestly, these lose the most in translation. Rhymes, songs and wordplay rarely survive, so treat them as a reason for the kids to learn a few words of grandma’s language.
Shadowing practiceGrandparents visiting from abroad
A month-long visit is many short conversations. Paid plans have no per-minute metering, so nobody has to ration them.
The big family gathering
At a party with several languages, two-way handles two at a time. For speeches, let each relative read along on their own phone instead.
Broadcast ModeTalk face to face — and hear the translation out loud
Put one phone between you. Whisperr listens for both languages, translates each person, and speaks the translation aloud.
- Two Way Conversation: set the direction to ⇄ and Whisperr listens for both languages on one microphone
- Speech Mode reads each translation aloud, so nobody has to look at the screen
- Nobody has to tap anything between turns

“I love how easy Whisperr is to use and how it accurately understands and translates text and speech across different languages. It's so effective that even in scenarios where other tools might fail, Whisperr performs perfectly. Additionally, the ability to select languages for translation directly on a phone is fantastic. This feature helps us translate church services, ensuring everyone understands without missing anything important. The initial setup was straightforward, making it smooth to start using immediately.”
Fast Translations and a Clear, Easy-to-Read Layout
“It translated really fast, and the way the text appears on the screen—with its clear layout—is very easy to read.”

Top-Notch Speech Recognition and Flashcard-Style Translations for Fast Study
“Whisperr's speech recognition and translation quality are both top-notch, and better than similar tools I've tried so far. Beyond that, as a Japanese learner, I especially like how Whisperr displays each sentence and its translation almost like flashcards, with a text-to-speech button for each one. That setup makes studying feel fast and efficient, and it's easy to review sentence by sentence.”
Simple Real-Time Translation for Work
“I like best about Whisperr is that it feels simple and straightforward to use.”

Across two generations
A way to talk while the language catches up
It is common: the parents moved, the kids grew up in the new language, and the grandparents never did. The love is there; the shared words are not. Whisperr fills the gap on a phone you already have.
Hear it, no reading needed
Speech Mode reads each translation aloud, so a five-year-old and an eighty-year-old can both follow without looking at a screen.
Nobody has to be the interpreter
Parents stuck translating between their kids and their own parents can step out. Whisperr listens for both languages and nobody taps anything between turns.
Stories, written down
Each line appears in the language it was spoken in, with the translation under it. On iPhone and Android, transcripts stay on your phone, so you can scroll back through grandpa’s story later.
Calls across time zones
Grandparents abroad? Put the video call on speaker with Whisperr on the same phone and read along, or join from a computer and capture the call audio.
Beyond the big languages
On the web and desktop apps Whisperr covers 60+ languages, many of them heritage languages that grandparents speak at home. Check yours in the app before the visit.
Simple enough for grandparents
Face to face, they do not touch the phone at all: they just talk. Free sessions are limited in length, so a whole dinner or a long call needs a paid plan: a flat fee with unlimited use and no per-minute or per-language metering.
Let them hear each other
Two-way translation between generations, on one phone. Free to try.
