Translate Messenger Calls in Real Time

Talk to family and friends on Facebook Messenger when you do not share a language. Whisperr translates the call live on your phone or in your web browser.

  1. 1

    Pick the languages

Choose the language being spoken and the one you want to read.

  2. 2

    Press Record and speak

Say a sentence or two, the way you would on a Messenger call.

  3. 3

    Read the translation live

Text appears as the words are spoken. The steps below show how to do this on a real call.

When the tab picker opens, tick Share tab audio — without it there is no sound to translate.

Translate a Messenger call on your phone

Use the Whisperr app on iPhone or Android, on the same phone as your call.

  1. 1

Start your Messenger call on speaker

Open the chat in the Messenger app and start an audio or video call. Then turn on the speaker. No phone app can capture a call on the same phone, so Whisperr listens through the microphone.

  2. 2

    Turn Echo Cancellation off

In Whisperr, open Settings and find it under Transcription Settings. With it off, Whisperr can hear the voice coming from your phone’s speaker.

  3. 3

    Press Record and read

Choose your two languages, press Record and read the translation as the other person talks. A quiet room gives better results.

Translate a Messenger call in your web browser

The Messenger desktop apps for Mac and Windows are no longer available, so on a computer Messenger runs in your browser.

  1. 1

Start the call in a Chrome tab

Open messenger.com in Chrome, click the person or group, then click Audio call or Video call at the top right.

  2. 2

Open the Whisperr Web App in another tab

Go to whisperr.co/app in the same browser and choose your languages. Chrome and Edge can capture a tab’s audio.

  3. 3

    Capture the call’s tab

Press Record, choose Screen Capture, pick the Messenger tab and tick Share tab audio. It must be a tab, not a window or your whole screen.

  4. 4

    Keep the translation on top

Click Floating subtitles and the translation stays above the call while you talk.

Top-Notch Speech Recognition and Flashcard-Style Translations for Fast Study

“Whisperr's speech recognition and translation quality are both top-notch, and better than similar tools I've tried so far. Beyond that, as a Japanese learner, I especially like how Whisperr displays each sentence and its translation almost like flashcards, with a text-to-speech button for each one. That setup makes studying feel fast and efficient, and it's easy to review sentence by sentence.”

Messenger call translation FAQ

Is there still a Messenger desktop app?+
No. Meta’s help page says the Mac and Windows apps are no longer available, and points computer users to a web browser. That is why this page uses the Whisperr Web App on a computer.
Can I use the Whisperr desktop app with Messenger in a browser?+
Yes. The desktop app captures System audio on Mac and Windows, so it also hears a call playing in your browser.
Which browser do I need?+
Chrome or Edge. Whisperr captures the audio of a browser tab, and you need to tick Share tab audio when you pick it.
Does the other person need Whisperr?+
No. Only you need it, and they stay in Messenger as usual.
Is it free?+
You can try it free, but the free plan limits session length, so it will not cover a long call. Paid plans are a flat fee with unlimited use and no per-minute or per-language metering.
Can I use it for medical or legal Messenger calls?+
Whisperr is not a certified interpreter. For legal, medical or safety-critical conversations, use a qualified human interpreter.
